Yet in both youth and age he showed similar gifts: an innate gentleness of spirit, a sense of latent melancholy, an inquisitive intellect. Warner’s stage career falls into two distinct halves: a youthful decade of riotous acclaim and a late-life flowering separated by a period from 1972 to 2001 when he forsook the stage to carve out a career in cinema. The eccentric-looking bookseller was, I suddenly realised, a potentially great actor. I had no idea who he was, until, in 1963, I saw him on the Stratford stage playing Trinculo, Cinna the Poet and, eventually, Henry VI. As a teenager in Leamington Spa in the late 1950s, I used to haunt the bookshop in a local department store, Burgis and Colbourne, where serving behind the counter was a lanky, straw-haired guy in an ill-fitting Dickensian suit. Meyer also directed Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991 and made Warner the stately and sympathetically presidential-looking chancellor of the Klingon high council.I have never forgotten my first sighting of David Warner, who has died aged 80. The role is perfect for Warner: disturbing, intelligent, alienated. Stevenson uses this invention to evade the police and escape into the future and Wells follows him to the deeply strange and alien world of the late 1970s. Warner plays 19th-century surgeon John Stevenson who is suspected of being Jack the Ripper meanwhile HG Wells (played by Malcolm McDowell) reveals to his associates that he has invented in reality the kind of time machine featured in his work. Perhaps Warner’s most interesting role came in the 1979 cult sci-fi mystery thriller Time After Time by Nicholas Meyer. Four years later, Sam Peckinpah cast Warner as the itinerant preacher Reverend Joshua Sloane in The Ballad of Cable Hogue and for Alain Resnais he was John Gielgud’s troubled son Keith in Providence, released in 1977. It was the kind of interesting, textured lead role that an actor like him could expect to get in the theatre or in TV drama (Morgan was developed from a television play), but maybe not so much in the movies. Warner is gangly and tall, awkward, fiercely charismatic, voluble, with a mop of fair, a little like the young Rhys Ifans. He was nominated for a Bafta for Karel Reisz’s fascinating Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment in 1966, an angrily-unhappy-young-man role for the times: the mercurial leftwing artist whose wife has left him for a smoothie art dealer. It wasn’t true to say that the movies didn’t give Warner a leading role. I remember literally jumping out of my seat in the cinema when I first saw Warner’s fake prosthetic head spinning up into the air In John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Warner is the consulting psychiatrist Dr Wrenn, to whom the hero John Trent, played by Sam Neill, recounts his disturbing story: at this stage in his career, Warner is perhaps assuming the father-confessor role. Warner was also to have an iconic horror presence in Anthony Hickox’s 1988 movie Waxwork, playing the sinister Mr Lincoln, who owns a creepy wax museum whose horrifying exhibits can enfold unwary visitors into their own hellish reality. Macabre … Warner and Gregory Peck in The Omen. I remember literally jumping out of my seat in the cinema when I first saw Warner’s fake prosthetic head spinning up into the air, and at the dawn of the VHS age, this horribly ingenious spectacle was repeatedly savoured by generations of horror fans on pause and rewind. Keith defiantly picks them up, saying he will use them himself, at which point dark forces release the handbrake on a builder’s truck parked nearby with an inadequately secured sheet of plateglass in the back. The climatically gruesome moment comes when Peck soft-heartedly refuses to use the special antichrist-killing daggers on the child and throws them away. It was Warner’s destiny to have one of the most macabre and shocking death scenes in movie history in the classic 1976 chiller The Omen, a stomach-turningly horrible coup which he endured in the role of Keith, the long-haired and wild-eyed photographer who notices that there is something very wrong with the cherubic baby adopted by the US ambassador and his wife: Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. David Warner was a distinguished English Shakespearean actor, in fact one of the great stage Hamlets of his generation but, in movie terms, and especially as he got older, his strong, intelligent face and equine handsomeness almost made him the English Max von Sydow, eminently castable in supporting character roles as troubled or darkly villainous people in scary films.

Most of the plastered skulls were from adult males, but some belonged to women and children. Other sites where plastered skulls were excavated include Ain Ghazal and Amman, Jordan, and Tell Ramad, Syria. CC BY 2.5 ) The Meaning of These Plaster Death Masks Plastered skulls from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B site of Yiftahel in Israel. In 2016 facial reconstruction experts from the Imaging and Analysis Center at the Natural History Museum recreated his face by creating a digital 3D model which was put on display at the British Museum. At about 9,500-years-old, this is the Jericho Skull, know as the “ oldest portrait in the British Museum ,” one of seven Neolithic plastered skulls Kenyon discovered during her Jericho excavations. These include what is arguably the most famous plastered human skull found to date. Similar skulls were discovered by Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s. One such skull was excavated in the 1930s by John Garstang at Jericho, along with five other plastered skulls, and is currently in the Royal Ontario Museum. More than sixty plaster skulls have been found at six sites around the area of the Levant, usually dated to around 7,000 to 6,000 BC, but some go back as far as 8,000 BC. ( British Museum ) Plastered Skulls in the Levant On the right: The facial reconstruction of the Jericho Skull. On the left: The Neolithic Jericho Skull in the British Museum collection. Evidence suggests that the skulls were then displayed or stored with other plaster skulls. The subtle modelling used to create the life-like flesh is impressive in itself, keep in mind that this was achieved by combining plaster and iron oxide to give a skin-like color, but even more so given the very early date of these artifacts. They included details such as eyebrows or chins molded in plaster, shells were used for eyes, and it is believed that hairstyles and facial hair were then painted onto the plastered skulls. In some cases, Strange Remains explains that the skulls of their dead were removed and covered with plaster in order to create very life-like faces, or death masks, complete with shells inset for eyes and paint to imitate hair and moustaches. The flesh and jawbones were removed from the skulls in order to model the plaster over the bone and the physical traits of the faces seem specific to individuals, suggesting that these decorated skulls were portraits of the deceased. In Jericho, as well as placing the deceased under the floors of homes, the people also engaged in another unique mortuary practice. The Neolithic period is important because it is when we first find good evidence for religious and cultural practices, particularly those relating to burial customs. (Tamar Hayardeni / CC BY-SA 3.0 ) The Plastered Skulls of Jericho: Portraits of the Deceased? The site of Jericho, known as Tel es-Sultan, in Palestine. How a Woman Toppled the Legend of the Walls of Jericho: The Legacy of Kathleen Kenyonīy around 9,600 BC, the droughts and cold had come to an end, making it possible for Natufian groups to extend the duration of their stay, eventually leading to the first year round habitation and permanent settlement. A new culture based on agriculture and sedentary dwelling then emerged, characterized by small circular houses built of clay and stray bricks, cultivation of cereals, and burials of the dead within the floors of buildings. The Ancient City of Jericho: The Oldest City in the World. However, during the Younger Dryas period of cold and drought, permanent habitation of any one location was not possible. Located within the Fertile Crescent, Jericho was a popular camping ground for Natufian hunter-gatherer groups. Putting the Plastered Skulls of Jericho in ContextĪrchaeologists have unearthed the remains of more than twenty successive settlements in Jericho, the first of which dates back to around 10,000 BC, making it one of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet. Jericho (also called Tell es-Sultan ) is a city with an incredibly rich history located in the Palestinian West Bank, near the Jordan River, some 55 kilometers (34 mi) from Jerusalem. Besides being dubbed the oldest city in the world, and its inclusion in the Bible, it was also home to some very bizarre mortuary practices. As they leave the graveyard the man’s parents arrive for a funeral and, as is common with Fosse, time leaps forward by years, in a lingering, longing dance of intergenerational circularity. The drama’s premise is simple, the undercurrents are not: a man and a woman meet in a graveyard and begin an affair – perhaps they knew one another in a past life. Much has changed in Europe and the rest of the world in the intervening 17 years, however. “I can’t help wondering if the cultural gulf between Fosse’s world and our own is too wide,” wrote the Guardian critic when his 1999 play Dream of Autumn had its English language premiere in Dublin in 2006. Photograph: Scanpix Norway/AFP/Getty The play Jon Fosse receiving the Ibsen Prize in 2010. Parallel to this, the narrator is also writing a novel that is an acute observation of every instance of his “restless” existence: a perfect example of the “write, don’t think” maxim as Fosse instructed his students in the late 80s in Bergen, when this book was in the making. Yet one summer a chance encounter with Knut, now married and relatively successful, will lead to a devastating denouement. His most important achievement lies in his past – the rock band he had with his childhood friend Knut, with whom he has lost contact. The 30-year-old narrator seems to have failed at everything in life – he lives with his mother, is a virtual recluse, doesn’t seem able to do basic things for himself. Published in 1989, The Boathouse is the closest thing Fosse has written to a crime novel. It is typical of Fosse – bleak, with a grand use of a repeated central image, that of blackness, and structured around the grip of ancestral history (the Aliss of the title is Asle’s great-great-great-grandmother), doubles and repeated actions: Asle’s grandfather had the same name as him and met the same fate by drowning. In Fosse’s 2023 novella Aliss at the Fire, an old woman, Signe, lies by the fire at her house next to a fjord, dreaming of herself 20 years earlier and her husband, Asle, who rowed out one day on the water in a storm and never came back.
